The Japan International Machine Tool Fair
(JIMTOF) was first held in 1962 in Osaka, and
then in 1964 in Tokyo. It had been held every
other year in Osaka and Tokyo alternately until
1998, and JIMTOF has been held only in Tokyo
from 2000. International Manufacturing Technology
Show (IMTS), EMO Show, and JIMTOF are now the
three biggest shows in the world in the field
of machine tools. Since the 18th in 1996, JIMTOF
has been co-organized by Tokyo International
Trade Fair Commission (now Tokyo Big Sight Inc.)
and Japan Machine Tool Builders' Association. |

It was feared at first that the projected number
of machine tool manufacturers might not fully
participate in the JIMTOF, since the manufacturers
thought that their machines were not familiar
enough in the manufacturing industry to warrant
such a big trade fair.To the contrary, however,
more manufacturers than projected, both domestic
and international, participated in the JIMTOF,
resulting in hurried expansion from the initially
2,750 display stands in eight buildings to 2,894
display stands in nine buildings. Considering
the specific nature of the trade fair, it was
quite understandable that many visitors came
to the JIMTOF from the USA Production Engineers
Association, USSR Machine Tool Study Group,
West Germany Machine Tool Builders' Association,
and other international associations and organizations.
The total amount of sales during the JIMTOF
was 10,900,000,000 yen, 80% of which was from
the sales of lathes, milling machines and other
metalworking equipment. |

More than successful, enjoying as many
as 500,000 visitors. |

The DNC technique (a variation
of group control systems) attracted the
most attention. |

NC machine tools represent the majority
of displays. NCs have spread beyond machine
tools to peripherals for metal forming
devices. |

The number of visitors hit
a record high of over 600,000. |

of the JIMTOF invited the international exhibitors
to join a factory visit (to the first factory
of Toshiba Machine Co., Ltd. in Numazu City)
for the first time in the history of JIMTOF.
1st International Machine Tool Engineers' Conference.....Sponsored
by Japan Machine Tool Builders' Association
provided chances for first-class machine tool
researchers and engineers in the world to meet
together (at a conference room in Japan Press
Center) and exchange ideas for the development
of next-generation machine tools. |
